  1. I was so excited to see Marie K’s name as guest. I have always loved Marie’s comments here and it was nice to put a voice to the name. This was a really good and insightful commentary. I have never rated Inga as one of my favourite episodes but I will watch it anew now.
M*A*S*H was the programme I was allowed to stay up for so the theme tune didn’t have the same ‘bed time’ connotations for me, but I understand the sentiment.

  2. Great discussion and guest! Marie, I always enjoy reading your comments on here, and you were very insightful and funny on the podcast as well!

I too remember hearing the theme song as a child. I didn’t start watching the show in real time until the final season, but the song and the show were always present at least in the background from when I was very young.

  3. One of the things I always things I liked about Alan Alda was that he was willing to let Hawkeye be an a$$. It’s like he was letting men in the 1970s to understand how to act during a period when attitudes toward gender are changing.

    1. I agree with you Steve. Alda seemed to have no problem in making Hawkeye a flawed character. In the case of this episode, he was able to play the jerk and then show his journey into a becoming a better person. I think he may have been trying to show men of the era that they too could change their views on how women should be treated.

  4. Of course I’m gonna comment on the episode I’m actually on, who would I even be if I didn’t?
In all the excitement of being a guest, I plain skipped over some of my notes, and one thing I forgot to mention was this. The song Hawkeye sings in the shower in the beginning is Indian Love Call. That is the song they use to kill the aliens in Mars Attacks. So it’s the perfect song to get in the mood for a potential date, and also to kill extraterrestrial invaders. What more can you want for in a song? 🙂
Thank you so much for having me, Rob, I had such a great time!

  5. MK, terrific debut! It’s a joy to hear your insightful comments in your own voice. Thanks for making it happen, Iron Guts!!

I don’t actually know what I’m talking about, but I think Mariette Hartley’s accurate accent and facility with the medical terminology are a sign of her professionalism as an actor. They aren’t the most important part of her performance. However, the fact that she gets them right means they don’t pull you out of the story, so you get to really see the most important part of her performance.

The never-happened scene with Inga and the nurses sounds awesome, and I myself remember wishing that Inga and Margaret had interacted. I think I want to visit a universe where MASH is an hour-long show, with all the scenes from our universe and all of Marie’s scenes, too.

Keep up the great work, Iron Guts. Hear you next week!

  6. How great is this discussion with Lt. Marie? I’m ranking it among my very favorite M*A*S*H*casts…even though it covers an episode that I’ve never much enjoyed! 🙂

  7. I’m in the group that isn’t a huge fan of this episode because of the way that Inga is treated, especially by Charles. Every time I start to like Charles, be falls back into he typical superior manners.

What I did love is Marie’s thoughts and commentary! Just from the tine bit of “Suicide is Painless” that she hummed in the beginning of the episode,s I would love for her to record the entire song. Marie’s speaking voice is wonderful to listen to also. I hope she’s a guest again!

  8. Awesome episode!! Marie discussing how she doesn’t care for the romantic love story angle made me realise I also don’t care for it hahaha I guess it’s something about Margaret’s amazing speech being followed up immediately with Inga then accepting hawkeyes advances. But I also guess that’s part of being a complex multi faceted person, the right to change your mind and express yourself openly and pursue what you want! It’s sorta like.. a big shrug. Like sure okay. Also love what Marie said about how Margaret is ‘lifting her gaze from herself’ to talk about women as a collective! WOW!!!! I like to think THAT scene is what got alan alda his cartwheel-up-to-the-stage emmy :’)
