Great discussion and guest! Yet another strong episode for season seven. I like bottle episodes such as this.
I think The Bus in season four is another episode, along with Hawkeye and A Night at Rosie’s, in which we never see the camp.
This episode could have been a backdoor pilot for the Rosie’s spinoff series, a precursor to Cheers!
Victoria was a great guest. And her “suicide is painless” story had me laughing out loud.
SUNY Albany shout out! I grew up just outside Albany, NY and went to school just down the road at the College of Saint Rose. Such a small world …
I’m ready to found Rosieland for real. Who’s with me?
Lovely episode. Victoria is such a charming and enthusiastic guest and her mum sounds awesome (a potential future guest maybe?).
Thank you Andrea! I will definitely make the suggestion to my mom, although her favorite episodes are in season 4 but maybe she would want to talk about a later one!
I forgot to say, I didn’t know Joshua Bryant had died, that’s sad news.
I loved how Victoria’s Suicide is painless-story matched so well with the tone of the episode you discuss, what a fun coincidence!
I really like A Night at Rosie’s. I’m usually drawn to the more dramatic episodes, but this one is just charming. Not everything seems logical, but the characters wants to escape reality for a while, and we in the audience can just do the same thing.
I tend to like bottle episodes, so this is a treat. I would have loved if MASH did more of these, like an episode set only in post op, or The Swamp, or the mess tent even. So many possibilities.
The episodes has so many interesting details, like BJ for example. When he is upset he has to be Laverne, he sounds furious, and I like that we see how his rage is always right there under the surface.
I also really like when Hawkeye and BJ tells Potter they’re sorry, and he goes “You think that helps, don’t you”. Both of them are so used to being the funny, cool guys that can get away with things because of it. Hawkeye especially, we have seen him get angry at Radar for idolizing him, but he also loves being looked up too, I think. It gives him privileges. Had he not had charm and a winning smile, and a friend always by his side, things would have been much harder for him. I like how Potter is just unimpressed with both of them here.
I really like Scully, Joshua Bryant gives him so much charm, and he has an instant connection with Loretta Swit. They make a beautiful couple. Very interesting how he is all about being loud and rowdy with the boys, but puts his finger over Margaret’s mouth and tells her she talks too much. Interesting insight to his character, I like how this is introduced right away.
Also, this episode gives us an interesting glimpse of Margaret’s relationship with the nurses. Before, in The Nurses, we saw how much she hurt from not being included. Here, she can joke about it. They still dont know she wants to be included, though, so she still hasn’t been able to open up and reach her hand out to them, but its still a step on the way.
I also like how the flag of Rosieland is a pair of Boxers. We see so much lingerie on the show, always bras and stockings hanging everywhere, like the bulletin board, so it’s a nice change.
Lastly, Rob, Donald number 1? Really? I thought we decided we only talk about Donald number 2. Now you have to buy me a lousy cup of coffee and explain yourself.
Instant addition, I also thought about how early seasons Margaret would have reacted to this, if she had walked into the bar and met Scully. I think they would have had this instant connection earlier on too, and she is all about a charming smile and broad shoulders, so maybe she would have said yes a a dance. To boost morale, she probably would have told herself.
She is fiercely loyal to the people she cares about, as we will really see in next season, and had she felt this connection with Scully, maybe even early Margaret would have let him get away … I dont’t think she would have allowed him to kiss her, but maybe she would have given him a nod in the right direction. There’s an opening, go now. And then absolutely denied doing so, to herself most of all.
I think Margaret always longed for connection, for passion, and the whole could never love someone who didn’t outrank her was more her fathers words than her own heart. And we know she is no stranger to breaking rules, so I could see it play out like that. It’s interesting to think about.
Glad you touched on Josh Bryant’s passing but you missed a major MASH love connection. He married Melinda Mullins from 11.3 (Foreign Affairs) where she played Charles’ love interest.
Yes Aaron, I was waiting for that as well. Two mash people marrying!! Same as Loretta Swit and her former husband who was a guest on the show as well..
were rice krespies big in Korea? My uncle was a korean war vet who loved meling choclate bunnies on rice krispies
It’s great how so many MASH origin stories start with someone’s mother having great taste in TV! Also guys I can’t believe nobody made a ‘bottle’ episode joke!!! bottle episode!! like bottles!!! that you drink out of!!!!! Anyway, this episode has some amazing blocking and choreography, even beyond just the awesome stunts during the fight. Such a great use of the limited space packed absolutely chockers with extras. I love the way it feels at times like the segment ‘at the dance’ from the muppet show. Does anyone know what im talking about. You know what i mean cmon. Theres a great shot where the MPs have come for Scully and Hawk’s last line about being wanted in three other wars gets cut off by some people walking directly in front of the camera just as he reaches out an arm it’s so AWESOME and the whole episode feels just like that, lots of up and down and swinging around, long takes with lots of movement, so lively and twinkling and fun. The way rosieland spreads and infects each newcomer is awesome, love the image of it ‘metastasizing’ like Rob says. And it’s a great BJ episode OH YES! The flower behind his ear, ‘what hes tryna say is – and stop me if im wrong – what are you tryna say?’, squeezing all 15 metres of his ridiculous body in the tiny space between Hawk and Scully at the bar instead of doing anything else, and the way he seemed to be pissed-offedly paying every bloke who successfully did a handstand?? Lots of fun im having lots of fun is everyone else having lots of fun.
You guys got me wanting to see this one again tonight. And this is the first time I noticed while Rosie is cleaning up in the begining that she gets that cigar off a dirty table and puts it in her shirt pocket.
Never noticed that!!
Great show, Victoria and Rob. I always loved this episode, though I always though Scully was a creep. I also have had a few “Night at Rosie’s” in my day. One night in particular, if you substitute Korea for Baltimore, it’s almost the same night. I won’t elaborate.
Thank you Victoria for introducing the idea of the Kelvin timeline to M*A*S*H. IT EXPLAINS SO MUCH!! 😀
Haha you’re very welcome! It all stems from not being able to compare MASH the movie with MASH the show… but it’s not quite like a mirror universe thing either (neither side is evil,… but they are significantly different!), so I feel like the Kelvin timeline appropriation made more sense to me.
Tying and gagging Charles harkens to Hawkeye and Trapper doing the same to Frank. It really did feel like a crossing of the line at this stage of the series.
It also punctuated the response of Potter, which completely fits. Can you imagine the evolution of Henry if he took Hawk and Trap aside and said those lines about being disrespected?
That’s why I’m not a fan of this episode. Charles wasn’t trying to be a dick and pull rank like Frank asking him to be OD. It was time for Hawkeye to relieve him and he wanted him to do his damn job.
