  1. I am enjoying (and I agree with) your take on Woody as a better character than Coach. That in no way diminishes Coach, but Coach was a mostly fully-formed character, in large part because of his age and his back story, but I think also because of the era and Coach’s personality. Coach fit comfortably in the past, and his humor was warm and sometimes predictable. Woody is obviously at the start of his life journey out of Indiana. His humor could be more surprising and oddly insightful, like when he says in this episode that he has been thinking about what the janitor at Cheers said about sublimation. That’s my favorite line, by the way. My second is Diane’s comment about Sam’s termite impression as he chomps away on a stalk of broccoli. It’s great to hear you guys back for season 4.

  2. As you say, this isn’t one of the series best, but it does contain one of my all time fav jokes: when Woody and Beth talk about their weight loss, and Diane turns her head and does that “Norman, isn’t that great?” in her sing-songy voice.

Cheers was above doing fat jokes (thank goodness), so when they kinda went for one it had to be good. And the way Shelley Long delivers it is so pitch perfect–sweet but also condescending. Makes me laugh every time.
