  1. I used to love the promo glasses that the various fast food places would offer. There was a set of Popeye glasses from the mid-1970s that my mom may still have up in the attic. And it was a big deal to get the various Star Wars ones from McDonald’s too. I’m looking forward to the Superman Movie Minute. I think the Miss Tessmacher glass would have to be a Big Gulp.

  2. I was a picky eater as a kid, and Mexican food was off my list. So I missed out on the Taco Bell Superman glasses. Curse my finicky pallet! I do remember having some of the Empire Strikes Back glasses from Burger King.

My all time favorite piece of movie-related drinkware was the Phantom Menace Yoda cup I got from Pizza Hut (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/408842472404489742). It was a large plastic cup with a plastic Yoda cup topper, complete with moveable arms. I loved that cup. It was my constant companion at work, to the point that my coworkers would ask about Yoda, when he wasn’t with me. Unfortunately, the cup itself was broken in a failed kidnapping attempt by some of my colleagues. I should clarify that they were kidnapping Yoda not me. I still have the topper, but Yoda’s only half the Jedi he used to be.

  3. Very cool guys! I was always trying to get the special glasses as a kid of the 70’s and 80’s. I too had all the Empire Strikes Back Glasses from Burger King and then I had the Great Muppet Caper glasses from McDonalds. Over the years I’ve been able to fill in the gaps and collect all 14 of the 1976 Pepsi DC super hero glasses but have never ran into these Superman the Movie glasses. I don’t believe Taco Bell had much of a presence up here in the Pacific Northwest in the 70″s. In fact, don’t remember ever seeing a Taco Bell until the 90’s. Great podcast/subject!

  4. I remember a friend having some of these growing up, and/or seeing them at flea markets in the early ’80s. I also recall a time when I didn’t know what a Taco Bell was, and it sounded exotic. That was a very long time and a vast multitude of bean burritos ago. Even when I was living off comic shop wages, I could treat myself to their dollar menu.

      1. We had a Taco Bell in the student center on campus. It kept me alive for about 4 years! 🙂

We had a Burger QUEEN in town in the late 70s. Mascot was a little female bee. I forgot about that!

  5. The next podcast in my queue after this one was “Hornet’s Sting,” a Green Hornet show on the Chronic Rift Network. (Yes, there are other podcast networks!) The weird part though, was you concluded your show with a radio ad promoting the glasses, and the next show opened with a radio ad promoting a Green Hornet ring. It was quite seamless. I wasn’t paying very close attention, as I was mowing the grass, and at first I though it was you and another one of your toys!

  6. Great episode!! Love the discussions on merchandise. I really don’t remember these Superman cups (then again, I don’t remember hearing about the restaurant Taco Bell until the mid-1980s either).

Collector cups for me growing up pretty much consisted of the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK cups. Loved those so much, so i can only imagine how much these Superman cups meant to kids.

It’s amazing that nowadays you can get pint glasses with superheroes printed on them in Target. They are freakin’ everywhere!! I did buy some STAR TREK (2009 reboot) glasses because they reminded me of the old collector cups. Not the design (that was modern fancy), but the cups themselves were cylindrical (rather than pint glass) and the glass was fairly thin like the old Star Wars collector cups. 🙂

Great job on the episode, and great job with all the lead-up episodes on Superman stuff for SUPERMAN MOVIE MINUTE!
