  1. If you can impress Dhani Harrison – who was raised and taught by gods – then you must be doing something right.

  2. Great discussion guys. And great job with the edits as always Ryan. As I said when he passed, I wasn’t a huge Prince fan, but I definitely appreciated his genius. I was too square to get into him when I was a kid, but my older sister saw him on the Purple Rain tour, and he definitely influenced her style there for a bit.

Tom Petty Radio plays that “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” jam quite often, including the entire Prince solo. It’s epic, and apparently Tom didn’t mind him stealing the show from them after all. 🙂

I think Prince’s is legacy is secure. He had the talent to back up all the hype and then some.

    Chris

    1. No musician of any integrity would mind Prince taking over for that performance. 😉

Despite the recent revelations of Prince’s drug abuse, I think the lack of scandal associated with him will also help his legacy. Neil mentioned that Prince’s death seems to be felt more deeply than Michael Jackson’s, but I’m not sure that’s because of the music as much as it is the law suits and allegations that dogged Jackson for ten years before his death.

  3. Nice tribute episode guys, and even though I only know a tiny handful of the songs you mentioned (no “Raspberry Beret”, though? Come on!) I still enjoyed the deep dive.

Prince was the musical guest on SNL in the much–and deservedly-so–maligned 6th season, the first one after the original crew had left. Apparently it sounded A LOT like he said the F word during “Party Up.” Apparently someone in the control room turned to the NBC Censor on duty and said “Did he just say the F word?” The censor, knowing when not to look for trouble, said “Nah, he said ‘friggin.” Later, cast member Charles Rocket explicitly said the F word at the end of the show.

On a different note, I have always wondered if Bob Dylan and Prince ever met. Both pretty iconoclastic guys,. both from the wilds of Minnesota. I figure Bob must have made the trek to Paisley Park at least once, though I have yet to see any photographic evidence of such a titanic team-up.

    1. I can’t imagine Dylan and Prince never meeting. What an encounter that must have been! Hopefully that story will surface soon.

      1. From a 1987 interview with Bob in RS:

        The Phil Spector approach.
Well, the live approach. The world could use a new Phil Spector record, that’s for sure. I’d like to hear him do Prince.

Do you think Prince is talented?
Prince? Yeah, he’s a boy wonder.

Lately he’s seemed to be a little trapped inside of it all.
Well, there must be a giant inside there just raving to get out. I mean, he certainly don’t lack talent, that’s for sure.

  4. Thank you for another Great episode. I listen to and enjoy most shows on the network. I am a lifelong Prince supporter and was very impressed with the in depth knowledge you both have. I was amazed how I would think of some obscure fact and you guys would mention it. Neil’s history of being introduced to Prince mirrored my own. Prince was the soundtrack of my youth. Thanks again for this tribute ! You Rock!!!

  5. Good episode Daly boys. I do feel old and unhip, but I see what’s diggable for you and millions of others. I bought a second Prince song in the wake of this one.

  6. I’m still holding back the floodgates on my Prince love in anticipation of doing a devoted episode of Rolled Spine (delayed in part because I thought it would be on our upcoming musical memoir show, but it wouldn’t fit the format.) I’ll always regret not pulling together the funds to see the Musicology tour, the only chance I know of to have seen Prince live (and I thought he was going to draw more from that lousy album, so…) 1992 was way to late to lay claim to “proto-rap,” but I enjoyed the quasi-rap (and the mic gun.) Shocked that two of my very favorite Prince songs got no mention here (or if they did, I missed them) and that Ryan favors “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” so strongly (I just think it’s a solid pop number.)
I’m not much for his version of “A Case of You” either (Tori Amos does my favorite) but different strokes. I’d also argue that song for song, Prince made the right choice of giving away his originals to make other artists have hits he’d have not quite scored with (though I’d say he offered Cyndi Lauper the strongest competition over “When You Were Mine.”) I agree that 3121 is probably the strongest album of his latter day output. I’d also like to say that I’ve enjoyed the Daly Brothers podcasting duo the past couple of weeks, and hope for more team-ups in the future.

    1. Dare I ask, what are the two favorite Prince songs we forgot to mention? I think I remember you liking “Sign O the Times”, but don’t remember what else.

      1. I’m not that into “Sign ‘O The Times.” I wouldn’t say I dislike it, and it was ahead of its time, but there’s also an element of “try hard” in the lyrics that I find off-putting. It was very O’Neill/Adams “Relevant!” But the stretch of five songs after it on The Very Best of Prince are all among my favorites. Then “Diamonds and Pearls” and especially “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night” shit the bed so badly I often cut off the CD.

  7. Thanks for making this, Guys! I truly enjoyed the journey. I am a giant Prince fan and it was truly fun to hear your perspectives! Cheers <3

  8. My favourite was not mentioned here, so I just want to say that “Delirious” is pop perfection and I can’t possibly sit still when it plays. I hadn’t imagined I would ever live in a world without Prince and, even after a year, it still seems untrue.
