I don’t have much to offer on the Dylan front, but the Houston Press was our local alternative weekly, until it was finally put down a few years ago… probably because the Back Page convictions were the coffin nail in thinly veiled prostitution and drug trafficking solicitations. I can assure you that the intent of the “interpretation” was sardonic, as was the way of a bunch of local Gen-X leftist journos. I think it’s safe to assume of the song as you surmised, an extended Ledbelly riff.
