Oh man. This song…
Great discussion, fellas!
Hey Rob,
I’m not the Dylan “listener” that you are, but I have heard most of these songs, including this one, but it’s not very familiar to me. Weirdly, I’m more familiar with other sources that reference it! For instance the Paul Simon (& Garfunkel) song “A Simple Desultory Philippic.” I grew up listening to this record, even though I only got about a third of the references! One of the lines is; “He’s so unhip, when you talk about Dylan, he thinks you’re talking ’bout Dylan Thomas, whoever he was, The man ain’t got no culture. That’s all right, Ma, everybody must get stoned!”
Just as memorably was one of my first Avengers issues (#140?), when Thor says to the Beast, “Is that blood I spy upon your arm?” And Beast replies, “That’s all right, Ma, it’s already healing.” this line stuck with me for years. I figured it was just to show the Beast spoke in a “cool” way. Much later I realized how hip one had to be to totally grok Englehart’s Avengers!
